James T. Johnson was born in 1946 in the small town of Abbeville, Alabama, where life was often difficult for Black families. Raised by his grandmother, Mrs. Annie Peterman, James worked many small jobs to survive, picking cotton, shining shoes, sweeping streets, and delivering newspapers. Despite the hardships in his southern gothic memoir, he never gave up on education and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1974. His true story of hope and faith, shared in Searching for the Promised Land, tells of his struggle to find peace and respect in his hometown, where prejudice and jealousy tried to hold him back.
